What's the value in working with interns?

Writer: Barbara GiesingBarbara Giesing

As we get closer to the summer months (come on heat!), it’s a good time to think about working with interns at your organization.  But why should you?  What value does it bring to your company?

Working with interns is a win win situation.  Typically, interns are eager to learn and get a taste of what an industry or position will do.  If you’ve been out of school for a while, think back to when you were just starting and not really sure what you were getting into.  If you didn’t work as an intern, think about how valuable that insight could have been!

Working in an organization before you’re ready for full-time work provides a sense of reality, which may or may not be eye-opening for some.  It can reinforce the student’s commitment to move forward or make them step back and look for alternatives.  Either way, you want employees who are confident in their choices once hired.

On the flip side, organizations benefit by having new perspectives that provide creativity and momentum in areas that may have become rote.  It gives us an opportunity to see what is being taught in the schools and how we can best prepare and benefit. It also offers us the chance to see how an individual performs so that we all better succeed if we decide to bring them in full-time later.

So, if you don’t have an intern program yet, think about developing one.  If you do have one, relook at it to make sure you’re making the most of their experience and yours.  We all want dedicated and eager individuals coming in for the next generation of work.

Let’s help provide them the opportunities and skills to move us all forward!
