Helping staff in uncertain times

As news of layoffs, tariffs, potential recension, and other information bombards us, how do managers help staff in uncertain times?  Regardless of affiliations, there’s a lot going on these days and employees are often stressed.  What can managers do to help?

Sometimes, staff just need to know that we care.  Make a point to reach out to your staff, asking them how they’re doing and if there’s anything you can do to help.  Find out what resources you may have available through your benefits or local organizations.

Often, medical or ancillary insurance coverages (like life, disability insurances) have Employee Assistance Programs available that may offer free counseling and other resources.  Staff may not be aware of these and/or have forgotten about them, so reminding them can help.

Additionally, there are many free or discounted resources available through the community that provide help.  There are programs for mental illness, issues with finance, child and adult care needs, as well as other topics.  Putting together a list of resources and having them available for staff may be beneficial.

Remind staff of the value they play within the organization.  Knowing they matter can go a long way in providing reassurance.  We can all use some positive reinforcements.  Check in with staff and lets do what we can to help each other.

If you need some ideas on resources, I have some available on my website under resources at www.baghrconsulting.com.  Let’s do what we  can to make this a good week.

Sometimes it feels like there are shadows all around.
